Here's some details into some of the stats for Fishing Rods.

• Strength. This stat determines the weight the rod can 'safely' handle. The 'weights' it can handle is determined by Strength * 5. If a fish falls within the weight category of your rod, the letters are reduced (depending on how-far into your rods weight class it is), and the amount of durability your rod loses is lowered.
  
  If a catch is OUTSIDE your rods weightclass, the amount of durability you will lose is increased by quite a bit. Letters are their 'natural' amounts and not changed in any way (unless you have a specific bait on).
• Catch rate. This stat reduces the 'wait time' between catches, by said %. It can be stacked with lures (not additive), to reduce times even further.
  

Most Lures have a static durability decrease amount per-catch, which is currently set to 4% per catch.
